2011 end of year summary
The Sunshine Coast Concert Band finished their very successful year with a rousing "Kawana Carols" concert on Sunday 4th December.
The audience thoroughly enjoyed the lively programme of traditional carols and "unusual" Christmas songs, - held in the indoor comfort of the Kawana Community Hall.
The photo shows the band decked out in their colourful shirts and Christmas head gear, and there's even some colourful ties.
During the 2011 year, the band has held 11 concerts, and has raised close to $35,000 for the charities of Nambour Special School, Hear and Say, Cittamani Hospice, Bloomhill Hospice, Sunshine Coast Community Hospice (Katie Rose cottage), Legacy and Coolum Chaplaincy. Since the Band’s inception some 15 years ago more than $350,000 has been raised for local charities.
One of the most impressive and moving events for the SCCB is to provide the music for the Buderim Anzac Day ceremony which is held amongst the pines of the Buderim State School.
The SCCB is a voluntary community band under the direction of Ken Chadwick OAM. Apart from being the conductor for all rehearsals and concerts, Ken spends an enormous amount of time selecting new tunes and often writing many of the music scores, so that there is always something different at the concerts.
The SCCB also puts on 3 dances each year to raise money for their own funds. This enables them to purchase new sheet music, repair instruments, and hire their rehearsal hall.
All of the concerts require hours of dedicated practice to achieve the harmonious results which are appreciated by thousands of locals. Rehearsals are held each Wednesday night from 7.30pm in the Kawana Community Hall.
The members come from a vast range of professions, and many are professional musicians.
However, they all participate purely for ‘the love of it’, and most of the original members still play in this harmonious, happy band.
